Hypertensive adults with no symptoms of type 2 diabetes should be screened for it, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force re-affirmed.
The task force confirmed that there was "moderate certainty" of a substantial benefit for diabetes screening of asymptomatic patients with a sustained blood pressure greater than 135/80 mm Hg -- either treated or untreated.
The new guidelines, updating the 2003 recommendations for screening for type 2 diabetes, were published recently
The three tests the task force mentioned for screening were fasting plasma glucose, two-hour postload plasma glucose, and hemoglobin A1c, although the gold standard and an appropriate screening interval remained unclear. The ADA has recommended screening every three years.

in our country we are screening all hypertensives and hyperlipidemia cases too as a routine anually though recommendations state once in 3 years.i know its a big burden on lab services but new cases of diabetes are picked up everyday.**
American Academy of Family Physicians recommend screening for hyperlipidemia too. It is for patients with high risk of CHD.
